The soul’s desire to grow can sometimes appear as depression, fear, anxiety, or compulsion. In the midst of our suffering, it can be hard to hear or understand the needs of the soul. All we feel are our symptoms. At such moments we need an Other, someone walking alongside us who can hear the soul’s sacred invitation beneath the symptomatic cry for help. It’s in the presence of another, I believe, that we can discover that suffering is not meaningless, but sacred. Within our pain we may discover that suffering is the road to transformation.
There are times in life when we are forced to enter a long, dark valley that takes us into the depths of suffering. Perhaps you’ve experienced a terrible trauma or the loss of a loved one through death or separation; maybe you’ve been diagnosed with life-altering illness. At such times, it can feel impossible to imagine that you will ever emerge from suffering or sadness. Sharing our suffering with another who can help to hold our burden may be the only way through such a dark passage in life. It helps to know that there is someone who has been there and who can understand.
